Domenica, 18 marzo 2012, al Cartoons Festival di Roma, una ventina di attivisti del movimento per il boicottaggio, disinvestimento e sanzioni (BDS) contro Israele hanno chiesto la parola, concessa dagli organizzatori, prima della presentazione di Hanan Kaminski, direttore della scuola di animazione della Bezalel Academy di Gerusalemme. Il festival si svolgeva a pochi metri di distanza dal monumento che ricorda Rachel Corrie, attivista statunitense uccisa a Gaza il 16 marzo 2003 da un bulldozer israeliano mentre tentava di impedire la demolizione di una casa Palestinese.
Gli attivisti hanno evidenziato al pubblico come la partecipazione della Bezalel, con il patrocinio e il contributo finanziario dell’Ambasciata di Israele in Italia, rappresenti uno dei tanti tentativi da parte di Israele di usare la cultura per ripulire la propria immagine e distrarre l’attenzione dalle politiche di occupazione, colonialismo e apartheid.
Nel 2005, Nissim Ben-Sheetrit del Ministero degli Esteri ha affermato: “Vediamo la cultura come uno strumento di propaganda di primo ordine, e non facciamo differenza tra propaganda e cultura”. Artisti israeliani che accettano fondi dal Ministero degli Esteri sono, infatti, tenuti a firmare un contratto nel quale si afferma che l´artista “è consapevole che lo scopo di aver contrattato i suoi servizi è di promuovere le politiche dello Stato di Israele attraverso la cultura e l´arte, compreso contribuire a creare un´immagine positiva di Israele“.
Gli attivisti hanno denunciato l´uso dell´arte per coprire i crimini di Israele, ricordando al pubblico del Palladium che l´Ambasciata israeliana, in rappresentanza del governo di Israele, ha anche “patrocinato” i recenti raid aerei israeliani a Gaza uccidendo 28 palestinesi e ferendone circa 80, la demolizione di 24,000 case palestinesi, la detenzione senza capi d´accusa di oltre 300 prigionieri politici palestinesi, la costruzione del Muro d’Aparthed e degli insediamenti ilegali, la confisca di terre palestinesi e gli oltre 1400 civili uccisi a Gaza durante Piombo Fuso, di cui 500 bambini. L´intervento è stato accolto dal pubblico con un caloroso applauso e più persone hanno lasciato la sala insieme agli attivisti. L´appello palestinese per il BDS invita al boicottaggio delle attività commerciali israeliane insieme alle sue istituzioni culturali e accademiche finché Israele non rispetti il diritto internazionale e i diritti umani.

Rome, Italy: Boycott Action Condemning the Use of Culture to Cover Israeli Crimes
On Sunday, March 18, 2012, at the Cortoons Festival of Rome, a group of 20 activists of the movement for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel requested, and were granted by the organizers, the possibility to speak prior to the presentation by Hanan Kaminski, director of the school of animation of the Bezalel Academy of Jerusalem.
The festival took place just meters away from the monument commemorating Rachel Corrie, a US activist killed in Gaza on March 16, 2003 by an Israeli bulldozer while attempting to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home.
The BDS activists informed the audience that the participation of Bezalel, with the sponsorship and financial support of the Israeli Embassy in Italy, represents one of many attempts by Israel to use culture to rebrand its image and divert attention from policies of occupation, colonialism and apartheid.
In 2005, Nissim Ben-Sheetrit of Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated: “We see culture as a propaganda tool of the first rank, and we do not differentiate between propaganda and culture.”
Artists who accept funding from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs are required to sign a contract which states that the artist “is aware that the purpose of ordering services from him is to promote the policy interests of the State of Israel via culture and art, including contributing to creating a positive image for Israel.”
The activists condemned the use of art to cover the crimes of Israel, reminding the audience that the Israeli Embassy, representing the Government of Israel, also “sponsored” the recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza that killed 28 Palestinians and wounded 80, the demolition of 24,000 Palestinian homes, the detention without charge of more than 300 Palestinian political prisoners, the Apartheid Wall and illegal settlements, the confiscation of Palestinian land and the over 1400 civilians killed in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead, including 500 children.
The words of the activists were greeted with warm applause from the audience and several people left the theatre along with the activists.
The Palestinian appeal for BDS calls for a boycott of Israeli businesses as well as its cultural and academic institutions until Israel complies with international law and human rights.
